Million Dollar Highway US 550 between Silverton and Ouray in the San Juan Mountains

Best Motorcycle Rides in Colorado, 5 High Country Roads

Colorado's best motorcycle rides are all altitude rides. The Million Dollar Highway climbs to 11,018 feet with no guardrails, Independence Pass crosses the Continental Divide at 12,095 feet, Trail Ridge Road tops out at 12,183 feet as the highest continuous paved road in North America, and the Pikes Peak Highway ends on a 14,115-foot summit. That is the appeal and also the constraint: most of these roads are shut for six months a year, several require a reservation or a toll, and every one of them will show you weather that has no relationship to the forecast in Denver. Here is what each is like and what it takes to ride it.

Million Dollar Highway, US 550

People apply the name to the whole Durango–Ouray run, but the Million Dollar Highway proper is the twelve miles south of Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge to the summit of Red Mountain Pass at 11,018 feet. That is the stretch with the reputation: steep cliffs, narrow lanes cut directly into the mountainside, hairpins used to gain elevation, and no guardrails.

Direction changes the ride completely. Northbound from Silverton to Ouray you hug the inside of the curves. Southbound from Ouray you are on the outside edge, looking straight down. Neither is dangerous at a sane pace; both are memorable, and riders who are uncomfortable with exposure should go north.

The wider Ouray-to-Silverton section runs 23 miles and is crossed by seventy named avalanche paths, which is why one stretch has a snow shed over an active chute and why the road can close abruptly in winter. Silverton sits at 9,320 feet, and the route south to Durango carries you over two more passes — Molas at 10,970 feet and Coal Bank at 10,640 feet. The whole thing is part of the San Juan Skyway. As for the name, nobody agrees: the stories are that it cost a million dollars a mile to build in the 1920s, and that the fill dirt contains a million dollars in gold ore.

Practical warning: RVs travel this road in both directions, in lanes that are barely wide enough for them. Assume anything large will use part of your lane in the hairpins. If the loop carries on west into Utah, we cover UT 128 along the Colorado River at Moab separately.

Independence Pass, CO 82

The highest paved crossing of the Continental Divide in North America, at 12,095 feet in the Sawatch Range, midway between Aspen and Twin Lakes. It is the best pure riding on this list — both approaches run 6 percent grades with hairpin turns posted at 10 mph advisory speeds, and the top is genuine alpine tundra with Mount Elbert and La Plata Peak in view on a clear day.

Two things to know before you commit. First, the season. CDOT closes the pass after the first significant winter snowfall, or by 7 November at the latest, and aims to reopen just before Memorial Day weekend in late May, though after light winters it has opened as early as 12 May. Check CDOT the week you plan to ride rather than the day before, because the date moves with snowpack every year.

Second, the size limit. Oversized and overweight vehicles are banned, along with any vehicle or combination longer than 35 feet, regardless of weight. That rules out semis, buses and most RVs, and it is a large part of why the pass rides so well. Trucks still sneak through following GPS routing, and the accidents that follow are the reason CDOT worked with device makers to get the restriction into their maps. Rockfall on the Aspen approach has narrowed sections to a single 12-foot lane controlled by temporary traffic lights — expect to sit and wait somewhere.

Trail Ridge Road, US 34

Forty-eight miles from Estes Park to Grand Lake through Rocky Mountain National Park, reaching 12,183 feet near Fall River Pass — the highest continuous paved road in North America. It crosses the Continental Divide at Milner Pass, 10,758 feet, and spends about eleven miles above treeline on open tundra with nothing but sky on either side. Together with the connecting Beaver Meadow Road it forms a 55-mile All-American Road.

This is a sightseeing ride, not a corner-carving one. Speeds are low, traffic is heavy in July and August, and the wind above treeline is constant. What you get instead is the only paved road in the country that puts a motorcycle at 12,000 feet on a through route rather than a dead end. For a comparable alpine crossing further north, see our guide to Beartooth Pass on US 212.

Season. The high portion is closed from October to May. It opened for the 2026 season on 29 May, later than the park's usual target of the Friday before Memorial Day, because clearing the drifts takes about six weeks in a heavy year.

Fees and reservations. A motorcycle entrance pass is $25 for one day or $30 for seven, and admits up to two bikes with up to four people. On top of that, a timed entry reservation is required to enter the park between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily from 22 May through 12 October 2026, at a $2 processing fee. Enter before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. and you do not need one — which, given the afternoon thunderstorms, is the better plan anyway. If a storm catches you above treeline regardless, wet-pavement braking and line choice is worth reviewing before the trip.

Peak to Peak Scenic Byway

Fifty-five miles from SH 119 at Black Hawk north to Estes Park, where it meets US 34, US 36 and SH 7. It was built in 1918 and is Colorado's first scenic highway, now both a National Forest Scenic Byway and a Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway, and it connects directly to the Trail Ridge Road byway at its northern end.

Lower and gentler than everything else here, which is the point. It is the road that stays open when the passes are shut, the one you use to get to Estes Park without slabbing US 36, and the obvious first leg of a loop that finishes over Trail Ridge. Expect traffic near the casinos at Black Hawk and near Nederland on weekends.

Pikes Peak Highway

Nineteen miles of toll road from Cascade to the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,115 feet, built in 1915 with $500,000 of Spencer Penrose's money and maintained by the city of Colorado Springs since 1947. It has hosted the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb since 1916, which is the reason most riders have heard of it.

The costs and rules are specific. Admission from 1 May to 30 November is $18 per adult and $8 per child aged 6 to 15. From the Friday before Memorial Day through 30 September you also need a $2 timed-entry permit per vehicle to go past Mile 7. Uphill gates open at 7:30 a.m., last entry is 6 p.m., the summit closes at 7 p.m. and the downhill gates close at 8 p.m. The road is open year-round as far up as snow removal allows, and conditions change fast enough that the operators run a recorded line at 719-385-7325.

One detail that surprises first-timers: there is a mandatory brake temperature check on the way down. Vehicles that come down too hot get held until they cool. On a bike, use engine braking and take it in stages rather than dragging the brakes for 19 miles.

Gear notes for riding at altitude

Colorado does two things to a motorcycle that lower-elevation riding does not. Thin air is the obvious one — a carbureted bike will run rich and lose noticeable power above 10,000 feet, and even a fuel-injected bike feels flat on the climbs. Plan overtakes accordingly and stop expecting the throttle response you get at sea level.

The less obvious one is what a 7,000-foot elevation change does to tire pressure and grip. You may set pressures cold at 5,000 feet in Estes Park and be riding at 12,000 feet an hour later, in air that is 25 degrees colder, on tires that never got properly warm because you never got above 40 mph. Our guide to what 7,000 feet of climbing does to your cold pressure explains what temperature and elevation actually change, and a TPMS sensor reports it live so you are reacting to a number instead of a hunch. We build these, so read that with that in mind.

The other altitude problem is planning. Fuel is sparse in the San Juans, cell coverage over the passes is unreliable, and closures move. Having your route, your fuel stops and your reservation window on a sunlight-readable motorcycle riding system keeps the phone in your jacket through the afternoon hail these mountains produce most summer days. The JADO S6 also records front and rear, which is worth having on a no-guardrail road shared with rental RVs.

FAQ

What is the best motorcycle ride in Colorado?

The Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton for pure drama, Independence Pass for the best riding, Trail Ridge Road if you want to say you rode a bike at 12,183 feet. A three-day loop can take in Independence Pass and Trail Ridge; the San Juans deserve their own trip.

When do Colorado's mountain passes open?

Independence Pass usually reopens just before Memorial Day and closes by 7 November at the latest. Trail Ridge Road's high section is closed from October to May and opened on 29 May in 2026. Both dates move every year with snowpack.

Do I need a reservation to ride Trail Ridge Road?

Between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. from 22 May to 12 October 2026, yes — a $2 timed entry reservation, plus the $25 one-day motorcycle entrance pass. Outside those hours you only need the entrance pass.

Is the Million Dollar Highway dangerous on a motorcycle?

It is exposed, not technical. Narrow lanes, sheer drops and no guardrails through the Uncompahgre Gorge, at speeds a competent rider has no trouble with. The risks are oversized vehicles crossing the center line and weather, not the corners.

How much does the Pikes Peak Highway cost?

$18 per adult from 1 May to 30 November, plus a $2 timed-entry permit per vehicle from the Friday before Memorial Day through 30 September.
